Small Tests and Experiments
A Podcast by Leigh Martinuzzi
“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.” Ralph Waldo EmersonI believe the quality of our life depends on the experiences we have. The constructionist theory suggests that humans, as we exist today, are a genuine melody of all past experiences, determining not only how we act and behave but how well we live. What we do next will shape our future well-being.
Experimenting and testing is the best way I know to seek out and deploy new experiences in life. It will allow you to mitigate risks and reduce those barriers to entry. Experience is what will shape the future paths we walk and ultimately the quality of life we live.

Walking a Spiritual Path
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
The subject of spirituality is sometimes a difficult one to navigate. There are those of us who speak about it and those of us who avoid it like the plague. It is often misunderstood, confused as a religious pursuit and associated with people that are a little bit “out there” in how they live their life. I was one of them. However, I have begun to understand spirituality and why a spiritual path in life is essential and available to all humankind.
What is spirituality? When you hear this term what your first thoughts and images that come to mind? (more…)

Love and Belonging
“I will love you through everything. Can you do yourself the same honour?” Scott Stabile
Love is a powerful energy that lives within us all. It is revealed through actions that act as the social glue that binds humanity together and allows us to share, contribute, protect, understand, collaborate, evolve and progress – united! Its purpose is to connect life, not separate it, and in this state, all life serves a better chance of survival. What is Enlightenment?
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Immanuel Kant was an 18th-century German Philosopher who wrote an essay in response to questions of enlightenment titled “Answering the Question: What Is Enlightenment?” His thoughts on enlightenment described it as “man’s emergence from his self-incurred immaturity.”
The concept centres around the idea of autonomy suggesting that one’s inability in autonomous thought and action is what keeps oneself immature and stuck and thus preventing enlightenment.
In this article, I wish to answer the question of what enlightenment. I will begin with my definition of enlightenment. (more…)

Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Not everyone is made out for a life of an entrepreneur. I am not an entrepreneur! I feel I am more of a wantrepreneur. Whatever the case, from an external perspective the idea of being an entrepreneur looks desirable. Freedom to pursue your interests and passions. Be your own boss and make a handsome living in the process.
In this article, I attempt to answer the questions of what it takes to be an entrepreneur? How do I know if I’m an entrepreneur? And is this lifestyle the career path for me?
Speaking with Jeet Banerjee recently he described some symptoms of being an entrepreneur. A few you may be familiar however the one that comes to my mind is an eagerness to become your own boss or an inability to work with others. Jeet suggests unhappiness, a lack of fulfilment, decreased motivation and a tendency to watch the clock are all familiar to those with the itch to be an entrepreneur. (more…)

Work with People You Want to Work With
by Leigh Martinuzzi

I have spent much energy and time by trying to please everyone, trying to be accepted, trying to be liked but realised I had to change my ways. I began to eliminate those I didn’t want to work with, play with, be with, progress with, achieve with and love. It’s an elimination tactic that just may help you thrive in what you do. (more…)
The Lost Art of Connection
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Relationships. Love. Human connection. Belongingness. These are essential elements of life and fundamental to the quality of our experience. Without them, we will suffer. They bring us meaning and purpose. They bring us happiness. However, I fear we are losing the art of connection, and I fear this is impacting our relationships and the quality of our life
According to Darwinism theory, humans are adaptable to their environment. To evolve, we adapt. All life does. The purpose – to carry on our genes. To reproduce and have our genes progress to the next generations. Ultimately survive! I like to believe we crave happiness. That deep joy is the primary motivation, however, by design, perhaps it’s not. (more…)

Lewis Howes has a podcast that sits in the top 100 podcasts on iTunes. He is a lifestyle entrepreneur with a story that takes you on a journey from broken places to success. Lewis has a couple of New York Times best-selling books and a repertoire of celebrity endorsements. I don’t see eye to eye with everything he says and does, but I deeply respect the work he’s doing.
If you want to read his full story check out his About Page here. I do appreciate how Lewis openly shares many aspects of his past with his guests. As a child, he was sexually abused, he always felt left out growing up, and despite significant achievements in the sporting arena, it all came crashing down after an injury. He found himself broke with twenty dollars to his name sleeping on his sister’s couch. (more…)
Self-Doubt
by Leigh Martinuzzi
self-doubt (noun) -lack of confidence in oneself and one’s abilities.
“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win,
by fearing to attempt.” William ShakespeareSelf-doubt is often described as our dark side or inner “gremlins” that question our motive, intention, ability and Self. It seems ludicrous to doubt oneself and yet we all do. It may not mean that we lack confidence or have low self-esteem. Even when we know through direct experience that we are capable self-doubt still lingers. I have to wonder why and for what purpose does it serve? (more…)
Hustle! The Freedom From The Need to Be Busy
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
Hustle! This word has become common tongue in our culture. We’ve become a society obsessed with being busy. Why is there a need to always be so busy? What’s the reason? What is the cause? Is all this “busyness” necessary? Is it tearing our lives apart? Is hustle purposeful to progress?
An excellent place to start is to differentiate between being productive versus being busy. As we unfold specific characteristics of each type, we will discover the secrets to finding freedom from our need to be “busy.” (more…)

Allen Carr’s Easy Way To Stop Smoking
A book reflection by Leigh Martinuzzi
Allen Carr is a disciplined man, always has been. As a professional and successful accountant for many years, life was good. There was only one matter that caused him a great deal of pain and suffering – his addiction to nicotine. When he eventually quit smoking, with ease, he decided to go out and help others. He was driven to help cure the world’s smokers.
In Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking, he explains how he went from smoking 100 cigarettes a day to zero without suffering. For 30 years Allen was a chain-smoker. He couldn’t do anything without first lighting up. As nicotine addiction progresses, it takes over our lives until it eventually destroys our life. (more…)
Enlightenment
by Leigh Martinuzzi
Buddha said that to enjoy good health, to bring true happiness to one’s family, to bring peace to all, one must first discipline and control one’s own mind. If a man can control his mind he can find the way to Enlightenment, and all wisdom and virtue will naturally come to him.
Immanuel Kant, an 18th-century German Philosopher, said that the path towards enlightenment is to free oneself of their Self-Incurred immaturity. What does that entail? (more…)
Being Terminated- A Fantastic Learning
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi (revised)
“Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit.” George Carlin
I was fired from my job. What a disaster. I was terminated on the spot and put under investigation. The investigation proved I was in the wrong and after two solid years of service in a senior management role my position ended.
As I felt it was an unfair dismissal, so I decided to challenge their decision. I took it to my solicitor who believed I had a case. The case dragged on for several months almost landing us in court. The experience left me with many kinds of emotions, confusion, slight depression, anger and strangely – excitement. (more…)

A Short History of Truth: Consolations for a Post-Truth World
A book reflection by Leigh Martinuzzi
In this book, the author, Julian Baggini, explores ten types of supposed truth. The purpose of this writing, I guess, is to give us comfort in truth in a world that is polarised by so many conflicting untruths. It helps us understand what truth is, how and why it can be distorted or misleading, and how we may find truth within the truth.
Julian Baggini is a writer, best-selling author, and philosopher. He has written and co-authored several other books including Edge of Reason, The Ego Trick and What’s It All About. Like myself, Julian is passionate about the search for meaning in a life full of mystery and marvel – exploring small thoughts about big things and big thoughts about small things. (more…)

The Beginnings of a Positive Mindset
by Leigh Martinuzzi
“Attitude is a choice. Happiness is a choice. Optimism is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Giving is a choice. Respect is a choice. Whatever choice you make makes you. Choose wisely.” Roy T. Bennett
As Michael Hyatt points out is that we can alter our happiness levels by merely smiling more. There is a direct correlation between smiling and positivity. Smiling produces positive emotions that benefit our well-being. Not to mention the reaction from others we receive when we give them a friendly smile. It can only be a good thing. (more…)

This leads him to research and writing If Your So Smart, Why Aren’t You Happy? – our topic of conversation in this interview. (more…)
Our Love with Our Phones
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
Are the figures true? Do we now spend on average 5 hours a day on our mobile phones?
If like me, you are shocked to hear these figures, I don’t blame you. I remember reading similar stats on the average amount of TV time. In adding it up, you will quickly find that it equates to approximately four or five working weeks. That’s a bloody lot of time!
Imagine what else we could be doing with our time. Imagine if you had four additional weeks a year to do whatever you wished. Would you spend it on your phone? Probably not. I wouldn’t! Of course, this is time accumulated over an entire day. We wouldn’t possibly spend 5 hours back-to-back on our phone, or maybe we would. (more…)
Addiction: A Philosophical Perspective by Candice Shelby
A book reflection by Leigh Martinuzzi
Addiction is real! I hate my addictions both current and past. I’ve suffered from a few for what seems like a lifetime. It is a significant part of the human condition. It has been argued to be a condition that influences many living species. In some way, shape or form, I would say that we are all prone and exposed to addiction at some stage in our life.
My interest in addiction is personal however from what I can tell; it’s common for all. Many make claims that addiction is a disease however as Candice Shelby in her book Addiction explains is an addiction is a phenomenon that is best solved on many different levels at once. (more…)

Ego

What is Ego? That is the question that I reflect on in this episode – my solo rant.
Neil Degrasse Tyson said, “If your ego starts out, ‘I am important, I am big, I am special,’ you’re in for some disappointments when you look around at what we’ve discovered about the universe. No, you’re not big. No, you’re not. You’re small in time and in space. And you have this frail vessel called the human body that’s limited on Earth.” (more…)

Under The Skin with Russell Brand
Russell Brand is a famous comedian and actor but has another side that keeps me curious and intrigued. His book revolution put Brand on the map as a somewhat political activist.
In this book, he captivated me with his insightful perspectives and a desire to inspire more peace in the world. Questions Better Asked by Leigh Martinuzzi
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
“The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge.” Thomas Berger
To ask questions is to live with an inquisitive, curious and progressive mind. Questions have the power to enhance the quality of our life, and we need to encourage each other to ask more. All questions lead to answers, and all responses have a purpose. Needless to say, no question is a wrong question, the only unfortunate question is one never asked.
When we ask questions we learn, we grow, we develop our awareness, and as we do, we begin to understand. What harm can come from that? (more…)

Distraction Kills Productivity
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” Steve Jobs
The noise of the external world is muting the sound of the internal world, and therefore our intuition pays the price. What moments do we have in the day to connect internally? How much time do we give to listen to our internal voice? What is consuming our attention and why?
Anger – How: Part 2 by Leigh Martinuzzi
“Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”
The purpose of anger is to heighten our awareness and attention so that we can focus on bringing balance to an unmet need. I’d consider these needs fundamental to our survival. Essential for living a satisfactory quality of life.
Needs that we perceive as necessary, those that test our tolerance levels leading to mild or intense forms of anger, are most likely “novel” needs. Those that we feel that without, our quality of life or experience will somehow less when in fact it has nothing to do with our overall well-being or survival. I’d like to call these “superficial needs.”
How Emotions are Made: Part 2
“An emotion is your brain’s creation of what your bodily sensations mean, in relation to what is going on around you in the world.”
I couldn’t resist the opportunity. I had to speak with Lisa again about her field of work. Lisa is a Professor of Psychology and her book How Emotions are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain is one of my favourite books of all time. A must read!

Minimalism -Fact or Fiction
“There are two ways to be rich: One is by acquiring much, and the other is by desiring little.” Jackie French Koller
There is a great deal of talk around the topic of minimalism at present, perhaps a bit too much talk. However, I for one believe there is plenty of value in creating a minimalist lifestyle. I’d also agree that there is a lot of hocus-pocus going around, making it a little bit trendy. For this reason, I recorded this episode to share my thoughts on whether minimalism is fact or fiction. Let me know what you think and enjoy!
Anger – What and Why: Part 1 by Leigh Martinuzzi
Anger; a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility, noun;
fill (someone) with anger; provoke anger in, verb.Anger is a powerful emotion triggered by how we feel based on the current state of our body, mind and environment. It is said to be a surface emotion which is perhaps due to the intensity of both the biological and physiological reactions that arise. Does anger serve a purpose? Could it be a beneficial emotion? Or is it wasteful, unnecessary and self-defeating?
I’ve never been an angry person however that may merely be a perspective based on how I feel anger shows up. I feel anger and have had many experiences in which I’ve allowed anger to take the best of me. However, overall, it is not something that I feel has a significant effect on my life. Perhaps it does. What I have learnt is that anger has multiple ways of expressing itself. More on this soon. (more…)

My Practice of Elimination – 5 for 5: Part 2
By Leigh Martinuzzi (revised – original post 07.09.2014)
Last week I revised an article I wrote on a practice I developed a few years back. To be honest, nothing too spectacular, but rather an exercise of clearing out the rubbish and replacing it with more good. You can check out the post here.
It came out of necessity. As I found myself halfway through the year, I began to notice patterns creeping back into my daily life. Things that I believed were disrupting the accomplishment of my goals. In reflection, I realised this and began to do work to remove what wasn’t working and improve on what was. (more…)

Anger
“You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger.” Buddha
Anger is a powerful surface emotion and like all emotions anger too perhaps has a purpose. The issue is not anger itself but how it causes us to act. Whether we express our anger in an aggressive unhealthy many or suppress it, both can lead to little resolve. In this episode, I talk on the topic of anger looking and the What, Why and then How we can better manage our anger.

The Practice of Elimination – 5 for 5
(revised – original post 07.09.2014)
After the first half of the year, I have had to revisit my goals, my visions, my direction, my focus and question why. The year has veered off track, and I need to figure out why it played out as it has and how I can course correct.
To be kind, it has been a great start to the year. However, I’m impatient and desire accomplishment. I think we all do. I am frustrated when I feel I’m moving away not towards my goals. In efforts to continually improve and grow I search for hidden answers. (more…)

Passions – The Pursuit of Purpose Through Deliberate Practice
“Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams.” Donovan Bailey
In this solo rant, I do a reading from an article I wrote about the pursuit of passions to assist one in living a purposeful life. There is no doubt in my mind that pursuing our passions makes life great. Passion breeds purpose. If defines internal motivation that pushes one into action and removes the unnecessary from our lives.

The Beginnings of a Positive Mindset
Positivity is contagious. It spreads like wildfire. It is the key to engaging, influencing, building, strengthening and maintaining relationships. When you conduct your life with a positive mindset and commit to putting it into daily practice, you will raise your level of happiness.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve done a fair bit of research on positivity, however, to be honest, I almost feel as though I was born an optimistic. But I know, or at least believe, that optimism isn’t a natural trait this. Positivity is a learned trait, and regardless of how we’ve been raised, we can alter our negative or positive disposition. We speak about the human psychological condition as it relates to unhealthy habits. The idea that to change certain behaviours we need to clean up our psychological and physical environments. We talk about lifestyle choices and the impact of societal influences. We discuss the idea of medication as a solution yet ultimately prevention is the best solution. Dr Vij wraps up the discussion with practices that we could all likely benefit from.
The Pursuit of Time and Money: Step into Radical Abundance and Discover the Secret to a Meaningful Prosperous Life by Sharon L. Spano PhD
In an interview, I did with Sharon Spano, the author of The Pursuit of Time and Money; she stated that the pursuit of time and money isn’t about learning how to be useful in managing these resources but instead a matter of shifting perspectives. That is the goal of this book. Through the lens of human development, Sharon hopes to help people experience transformational change as it relates to their time and money mindset.
I will admit up front that for the first half of this book and beyond I read it in a somewhat unenthusiastically manner. I felt there wasn’t enough meat in the opening chapters to get me excited about the journey of learning something new about time and money. (more…)

Are You Moving Away or Moving Towards?
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
At the core, we are biological beings who are driven by pleasure and pain. The fundamental human motivation is survival, what motivates us to fulfil this is to move away from what may be as harmful or limiting and move towards what enhances or nourishes this need. What I’ve learnt is that most of us can either be more strongly influenced by and therefore act upon what we wish to avoid or what we desire to move towards. What type are you, away or towards?
After doing some research on this topic, I feel that I have a towards personality. As for my wife, I think she’s an away type. It is not a representation of good or bad, rather it represents why people have different motivations. Ultimately it will affect the way we operate. (more…)

The Intelligent Heart: A Guide to the Compassionate Life by Dzigar Kongtrul and Joseph Waxman
There are few books I read as passionately as I did this one. It had me coming back enthusiastically to learn more. When I put it down, I couldn’t stop thinking about the learnings. With curiosity, I found myself in constant reflection on how the lessons applied to my life. If I could take these methods of mind training on board in practice, I wonder how much I could transform my life. As I read that last page I knew it would be a book I’d love to read again.
In this book, Dzigar Kongtrul shares practical insight into what he believes is the most profound teaching in traditional Tibetan Buddhism, tonglen. It is a Tibetan word that can be translated as “giving and taking” and is a meditation practice found in Tibetan Buddhism. In this book, Dzigar Kongtrul focuses on sharing lojong which is the practice of training the mind to be better able to practice Dharma. (more…)

Change
“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” Heraclitus
He is a reading of an article I wrote about change and impermanence. Nothing is permanent, I know this but it didn’t stop how I felt. (more…)
Sharing Is Expressive – Venting is Limiting
“Be Impeccable With Your Word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.” Don Miguel Ruiz
It is important to share how we are feeling. It’s a method of healing and self-expression. However, when we “vent” it may exacerbate the situation, intensify any emotions that exist, and limit any potential for resolution. Venting seems to work with the ego that is guided by untruth, poor fact and assumption. In this approach, we may find ourselves dealing with a higher level of suffering.
We’ve all heard about the benefits associated with positive affirmations. Dan McGinn, the author of Psyched Up, talks about the power in performance by using a technique called reappraisal. The positive stories we tell ourselves help booster confidence and reduce anxiety.
Venting is a focus on the negative aspects of our current state or condition. It is more about being dissatisfied or ingrateful about how external circumstances are perceived to affect our current or future well-being. To vent doesn’t merely involve kicking a chair or screaming at the top of our lungs. Venting evolves into inner dialogue that is negative and often false.
It becomes less about sharing how we feel and more about bitching, moaning and whining (BMW). At least that is how Cy Wakeman would explain venting. In an interview I did with Cy she said venting only promotes the ego. And if the ego if not controlled it can take us down paths we do not wish to walk. Venting assists it to do that.
The ego is a story that we cling to, especially if we are not aware, that will lead us further into a state that is not conducive to success, performance or a heightened sense of well-being. Sharing is healing, expressive and beautiful. Venting is about twisting the false reality we are obsessed with further out of control.
Cy’s thoughts were that we should not vent but share. In sharing, we can express our feelings and such expression is good for healing. Self-expression is useful for moving forward with our lives.
Venting, on the other hand, forces us to attach to a story that is not real, negative and often blown out of proportion. It takes the focus away from any lessons that may arise from an awareness of our feelings to focus on inner narration that is false and misleading.
Next time you want to vent or are told to vent, stop yourself. Instead, seek to understand why you feel that way. Share your feelings either in self-reflection and thought or with another, explore its truth and depth. Then in understanding perhaps you can avoid future occurrences and more importantly you can move on with life in a more positive and happy state.

How to Think: A Survival Guide for a World at Odds

Small Experiments and Testing
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
I believe the quality of our life depends on the experiences we have. Yes, there are circumstances and situations external to our direct control that undoubtedly will have an impact on the condition of our life and the experiences that we are either fortunate or unfortunate enough to live through.
What if we could influence these experiences?
Shaping them in a way that allows us to receive greater benefits. Looking for the positives in any negatives and even avoiding or removing ourselves from experiences that we don’t feel fit. That is why small experiments and testing in everyday life is a marvellous practice. (more…)

Why We Make Poor Decisions
Tim Ferriss shares a line by one of his mentors in which I feel sets the tone for why this topic is an incredibly important one. His mentor said, “Easy decisions make for a hard life. Hard decisions make for an easy life.” It had me reflecting on some of the decisions and choices I’ve had to make in recent times.
Decision making is one of the most laborious processes I know. For somethings, I can make decisions with relative ease, and for others, it can be a daunting task. I’ve made some excellent choices in life, some inferior ones, and at times when there are tough decisions to make I avoid them like the plague. Why?

Complacency
“The tragedy of life is often not in our failure, but rather in our complacency; not in our doing too much, but rather in our doing too little; not in our living above our ability, but rather in our living below our capacities.” Benjamin E. Mays
Complacency is a bitch. It’s like a double-edged sword. The dictionary defines it as have an uncritical or smug sense of satisfaction with oneself or one’s personal achievements. Nothing wrong with that, is there? Perhaps there is. Complacency may be a cause of ignorance and can result in a slowing of progress. I think for that reason it may even take us towards stagnation. Why can’t we be pleased with our current achievement and ourselves? Firstly, I believe that a heavy focus or smugness with self is a cause for the majority of our suffering. Secondly, complacency is a major cause of human error. What are your thoughts and stories of complacency?

The Common Grounds of Victimhood & Hate
Written & Narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi
Belongingness – a deep and fundamental human emotion.
- Why? Survival and reproduction.
Humans are animals and as with many animal groups belonging to social groups provide protection. Although this is not as relevant nowadays because we can survive pretty well without being a part of a tribe, we still do desire to belong to a group or groups. The social bonds and relationships we form in our networks have been proven to have profound benefits to our overall wellbeing.
People that are lonely or don’t meet this need to belong will have difficulty forming a level of self-identity. Who we are plays a critical role in how we think, the decisions we make and how we behave. If we lack a solid sense of identity – who are we? It brings our level of significance, relevance and meaning in life to a lower level. This is not a good thing. (more…)
Where the Ego Thrive – Unhealthy Environments
I had a great conversation with Cy Wakeman recently. We discussed her book, No Ego. During the interview, I learnt a lot about the ego, specifically how the ego added to workplace drama reduced business effectiveness. As Cy suggests, the ego takes us down the path of bitching, moaning and whining (BMW).
In our chat, Cy also made an interesting comment that leads me to the thought that the ego thrives in unhealthy environments. In this article, I wish to discuss the ego and the habitats it thrives. I do so with hope to explain why healthy conditions that we create and live within are essential if we wish to reach our peak state of being in life. Grubby environments are not. (more…)

Prosperity
Written & narrated by Leigh Martinuzzi
Recently I had a great conversation with Joan Sotkin on the podcast on the topic of prosperity (check it out here). Having reflected on our discussion I felt it was a good opportunity to share my perspectives and open up a similar dialogue in your life. When you think of this word, prosperity, what are the first thoughts that come to mind?
Many of us would immediately associate prosperity with wealth and material possessions. However, I believe prosperity or to be prosperous in life is more than a measure of the dollars in your bank or the wealth accumulation you achieve. There are other elements that also indicate one’s prosperity including the likes of health and happiness. (more…)
Depression
“That’s the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious, and it compounds daily, that it’s impossible to ever see the end. The fog is like a cage without a key.” Elizabeth Wurtzel
I believe we are all prone to it. I believe that some people are more prone to depression than others but I don’t believe anyone is entirely exempt. I suppose it depends on many varying factors including our upbringing and our current situation in life.
11 Methods of Changing Habits
This article is an extension of an essay I wrote, A Thought About Changing Habits, originally posted on the 7th of August, 2014 however recently revised and improved. I included the 11 methods in the original post, however, to develop better readability and reduce the length I decided to split it in two. This is the second part.
It’s been three years since writing this article, and I can tell you since then my knowledge and thoughts have grown and shifted, as one would expect.
It was three years ago that I began my personal-transformation journey. I started to invest heavily in my self-improvement. If that sounds selfish, I can tell you it’s not. If it weren’t for my drive, discipline and consistency, the quality of my life would have continued on a downward spiral thus affecting all of my relationships. And healthy relationships are a fundamental Life Principle to all life. (more…)

What I asked for in life I received. It was how I reacted, not responded, that has taught me a heck of a lot in life. We all continue to learn as we experience life. It is what we do with these life lessons that count.

Wake Up
“This is the real secret of life—to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” Alan Watts
To be awake is to become more aware of how our life is influenced, the ways in which we are coerced into believing and living a particular kind of existence. The engineered design of our reality. The creation of the delusional state of being that slaves us to a conditioned life.
Distraction Kills Productivity, Attention, and Awareness
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” Steve Jobs
The noise of the external world is muting the sound of the internal world, and therefore our intuition pays the price.
What moments do we have in the day to connect internally? How much time do we give to listen to our internal voice? What is consuming our attention and why?
I believe healthy desires can guide us in living a more beautiful and purposeful life. Desires push us beyond our comfort zone and into the areas of innovation and progress. They are a critical component of our evolution. They can lead us towards enlightenment – a more profound state of joy. (more…)

The Various Shades of Love
Why does love feel different? Why does our motivation for life increase when you’ve created life?
It feels satisfying having my mum and dad still with me. When I think about how fortunate I am, I sometimes feel guilty. Many children have had parents but lost them early, and some have never had parents. Divorce, separation, drug abuse, death, early adoption, abandonment, and any other reason. I am grateful to have amazing parents that have been there to support me throughout my life.
My love for my parents is deep but here is what I wonder, having children of my own I sense a differing effect of love. Why? And why, now that I have kids of my own, do I appear to have a raised level of ambition to live? Not that I am suicidal, but indeed I am more aware and concerned about my destructive behaviours. 5 Things That I’ll Be Doing This Festive Season
The “silly season” as they call it can be a chaotic time for many. There is so much going on, and as the changes to our routines are disrupted, we can experience anxiety, stress, unease and even disappointment or a little unhappiness. Of course, nobody wants this shit to infiltrate what’s meant to be an enjoyable, jolly time of the year, but it does, and I get it!
Over the years I have tried to relax, and although not always successful I feel I have learnt a thing or two. Unmet expectations are what I see as the most significant problem. We head into the festive season with beautiful visions of how things will be and yet when they don’t play our as expected; we become shitty, annoyed, and dissatisfied. The same is valid for how most of us experience life, right? (more…)
What keeps you up at night? What gets you out of bed in the morning?
“Find something that you love. Something that gets you so excited you can’t wait to get out of bed in the morning. Forget about money. Be happy.” Chris Gardner
When I was working for various companies in the cooperate industry people used to proudly say to me that various aspects of the business keep them up at night. At the time, I found it kind of wanky – and now that I reflect on it, I still find it wanky.

New Year Goals- The New Way (revised)
In this post, I am sharing an article I wrote a few years ago. It has been slightly edited but left as close to the original as possible. Having just read it I am fascinated by how my thoughts, beliefs and perspectives have changed. Nothing remains.
It is a representation of my thoughts three years back. In the end, I will write a short dot point summary to reflect my shifting perspectives, thoughts and feelings. Setting New Years Resolutions is a subject we can all relate to, so I hope by reading it you gain some value.
Here it is.
I have always been one to set new year’s resolutions. My mother still has archived New Year’s Resolution lists that I wrote years ago. So many unachieved goals. In reviewing these records, it’s startling how year after year the same goals appear. (more…)

Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming by Oreskes, Naomi, Conway, Erik M. (2010) Hardcover by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway
Doubt: a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction.
The opposite to doubt is certainty, conviction, confidence, and trust.
In this book – Merchants of Doubt, the authors go bravely into territory that many have not dared. They attack vital leaders, scientist and people of influence that have in their time very successfully created doubt among the public. Even in spite of hard scientific evidence and basic common sense. This book places those “Merchants of Doubt” in the spotlight. (more…)

Working for various companies in the cooperate industry people used to proudly say to me that multiple aspects of the business kept them up at night. At the time, I found it kind of “wanky,” and now that I reflect on it, I still find it “wanky.”
1. Wanky (slang)- contemptible, worthless, or stupid.

In this episode, I speak with Stuart Friedman about cross-cultural dynamics in efforts to better understand how we can improve our relationships. Culture as he defines it is “how things get done.” In understanding how others do things, based on their beliefs and values, we can hopefully knock down cultural barriers that lead to ineffectiveness. It starts with understanding our own values and beliefs.

The Credentials of Minimalism – Fact or Fiction?
The notion of living “minimally” seems to be trending in western culture across the globe. Is it a sign of the times? An indication that something is inherently imbalanced about the modern day lifestyles and consumeristic cultures we live.
I wonder, are we as a collective waking up to the unnecessary noise that like a disease is infecting our ability to live fully, freely and happily? Is minimalism sustainable? Is it a possible solution to much of our modern day dissatisfaction and depression? Or is it just another trend?
Like sheep in the herd are we just following the crowd? More information, more clutter, more distraction, more confusion, more consumerism. Just another way to mask our already insecure and dissatisfied lives. As we traverse this experience so far disconnected from our story, not knowing which way to turn, we cling to hope as the status quo clings to conformity. (more…)

Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done by Jon Acuff
“The start does matter. The beginning is significant. The first few steps are critical, but they are not the most important. Do you know what matters more and makes the start look almost silly and easy and almost insignificant? The finish.” Jon Acuff
The battle is perfectionism. I think that just about sums up the premise of this book. In the face of perfectionism, we struggle to finish all that we start. It can sometimes be the reason why we don’t start things in the first place but as Jon explains beautifully beginning is not the most significant hurdle, finishing is. (more…)
“Be Impeccable With Your Word. Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.” Don Miguel Ruiz

We’ve all heard about the benefits associated to positive affirmations. Dan McGinn, the author of Psyched Up, talks about the power in performance by using a technique called reappraisal. Similar to affirmations it’s about reinforcing the positive stories we tell ourselves to booster confidence and reduce anxiety. (more…)

The Ultimate Life Map – The Ultimate Leadership Tool
I have recently come across a Ted Talk and a book that has sparked my interest to writing this post. They were talks on leadership, motivation, and methods on how to produce the best results out of people as it relates to our occupations. However, leadership, motivation and how to reach our peak potential matter not only to the work we do but to the life we live and for that reason I believe these talks have valuable information for us all.
For a significant portion of our life, we all work, spending approximately a third of our day doing so. With the remaining time, we spend half of it sleeping, or we should, and the other half exploring the passions of life or trying to keep up with different demands. (more…)

Is self-mastery a mindset? Are we all able to achieve our full potential or is mastery only available to those with the resources or pre-existing talent?
Mastery is the comprehensive knowledge or skill on a particular subject. However, there is always more to learn as time passes and subjects change and evolve, and therefore self-mastery is a continuous, infinite and forever expansive. (more…)

What does it take to master any skill and become an expert in any particular field? Is it only exclusively available for a select few? Does it boil down to innate talent or something to do with our gene pool? Is mastery prohibitively tricky and therefore not something we can all obtain? Can anyone improve on any skill they desire? Walking Alone (revised)
So here I am walking through the bush in Australia by myself. I’ve been walking for about an hour, maybe two, and I am blown away by just how fascinating this place is.
I am hiking through the Lamington national park just near the southern border of Queensland, Australia. The hike I am on is called Shipstone Circuit, a 21-kilometer circuit walk. I would say other than the length it’s a moderate walk but a beautiful one.
Breathtaking views, transcending falls and scenery that forever changes. Areas of dry, rugged bush and scrub, to the whispering voices of wise old red cedar gums. From forests of invasive Picabeen palms alluring bird life to the luminous mystery of wet sub-tropical rainforest. I am no ecologist, but it indeed is a diverse journey through this quite part of the world. (more…)

Change: Uncertainty and The Fear of Missing Out
“Find joy in everything you choose to do. Every job, relationship, home… it’s your responsibility to love it, or change it.” Chuck Palahniuk
I have decided to move on with my life. Life decisions are never easy. They bring on all kinds of feelings that can be uncomfortable and even unbearable. They all rise from the notion of change. And the bigger they are, the longer they can be drawn out.

To Live is to Suffer – The Conditions We Create in Escape
“To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.” Friedrich Nietzsche
In giving up the pleasures that I once sought, those activities that consumed me, that caused me both pleasure and displeasure, in attempt to escape my perception of Self-suffering I ask myself, “has it helped?”
Buddha said, “Life is suffering.” It is however often misinterpreted. I am not here today to try to explain this misunderstanding. What I wish to do is share a quick thought on why there will always be an underlying sense of suffering in life.
Everything is changing, and nothing is permanent. Impermanence is suffering. Trying to hold on to all that is in constant flux leads to suffering, but we all continue to try hold on. (more…)

Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown
“Essentialism is not about how to get more things done; it’s about how to get the right things done. It doesn’t mean just doing less for the sake of less either. It is about making the wisest possible investment of your time and energy in order to operate at our highest point of contribution by doing only what is essential.” Greg McKeown

“Everything you do takes you closer to or further away from your goals” Craig Ballantyne
Have you ever had a day where everything goes smooth? You get to the end of the day, and while laying in bed, you just feel awesome!
Those are the days we wish for more of, right? But how often do they occur?
I remember the past not so long ago when I was stuck. Every day seemed like a significant drag. It felt like every day I tried so hard. I felt challenged. I was stressed. I thought I was doing everything right, but I felt like I was getting nowhere.
Passions – The Pursuit of Purpose Through Deliberate Practice
There is no doubt in my mind that pursuing our passions makes life great. Passion breeds purpose. It defines an internal motivation that pushes one into action and removes the unnecessary from our lives.
Every day we are all confronted with thoughts of passion. Things we wish to pursue that spark our curiosity and interest. Ideas of doing what we love. Weaving our hearts deepest desires into our daily lives make us dream and dreaming feels good! It is the source to enhance the flavours of an otherwise bland life.
We are all passionate about various things. Passions that have lived from the time we were toddlers and have since woven into the fabric of our personality and character. Some of which we still regularly pursue and shine a light on. Others that kept glowing and like oxygen to a flame only illuminate when we choose to bring breath to them. (more…)
In this episode, I first take a look at “what are thoughts?” I do this from the stance of introspection and studies of neuroscience and psychology. If thoughts become our reality than in understanding them and how we can influence them perhaps we will be better equipped to change undesirable realities that we live.
We are conscious beings and without consciousness, what then are we? Do we exist? What role does our consciousness play in directing our thoughts and our lives? (more…)

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” Joel A. Barker
What is your future vision? If you cannot answer this question, then it is my thought that you must make it a priority so that you can respond to this question.
Our future vision becomes the underlying guide of our lives. It sets the motion of the paths we pursue. It is like the blueprint for which we can map out our existence.
Without it, we will ineffectively navigate ourselves and traverse this life with less purpose, meaning, and happiness. I believe such lives will result in greater suffering and regret. (more…)
Work with People You Want to Work With.
Thoughts From A Real Estate Agents Perspective
Written by Leigh Martinuzzi
“When you please others in hopes of being accepted, you lose your self-worth in the process.” Dave Pelzer
I have spent much energy and time by trying to please everyone, trying to be accepted, trying to be liked but realised I had to change my ways. I began to eliminate those I didn’t want to work with, play with, be with, progress with, achieve with and love. It’s an elimination tactic that helps me thrive. Here’s why.
As a real estate agent, I had to deal with people every day. A big part of my job was to ask people for their business, to select me as the agent to sell their house. (more…)
“So. Monday. We meet again. We will never be friends—but maybe we can move past our mutual enmity toward a more-positive partnership.” Julio Alexi Genao
We don’t live in a utopian world. And while we all have dreams and visions of an ideal life we still will face challenges, adversity, and sorrow.
We have us up days, and we have our down days. Hopefully more up than down!
If you find yourself waking up on a Monday morning not with enthusiasm for the week ahead, not with a vision of what you wish to accomplish or intent for how you want to be but rather moaning and groaning then maybe it’s a signal that something needs adjusting. (more…)
The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating by David M. Buss
“While love is common, true love is rare, and I believe that few people are fortunate enough to experience it. The roads of regular love are well travelled and their markers are well understood by many – the mesmerizing attraction, the idealization obsession, the sexual afterglow, the profound self-sacrifice, and the desire to combine DNA. But true love takes its own course through uncharted territory. It knows no fences, eludes modern measurement, and seems scientifically woolly. But I know true love exists. I just can’t prove it.” David Buss
This is a really cool read! I went into it with kind of the wrong expectations but didn’t find myself disappointed. It is a book about the evolution of desire but not ‘desire’ in the general sense but rather the desire of the sexes and for matting and mateship (companionship). (more…)
“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” JF Kennedy
You can go out there and follow the roads already walked, or you can blaze your unique paths. Both will challenge you, cause you pain, fill you with fear, doubt and uncertainty but one will bring you greater happiness in pursuit and leave you looking back on your journey with a heightened sense of reward, not regret.
I had comfort in life. I had many great things. I had my moments of joy. I was surrounded by beautiful people and had a great deal to be grateful for in life, but I also lacked freedom and fulfillment. The life I was living was dissatisfying. I didn’t feel like life had any meaning, and I felt it would leave me living a life of regret. (more…)

(more…)

“That’s my only goal. Surround myself with funny people, and make sure everyone has a good time and works hard.” Joe Rogan
I believe Joe Rogan is a pioneer of podcasting. A friend introduced me to Rogan’s podcast, suggesting I check out his style and format. He also thought I would enjoy and find his conversations interesting and perhaps even a little educational. That’s how my Joe Rogan experience began.
It’s not a podcast that I listen to all the time. The primary reason for that is because it is bloody long. In the real sense of conversational podcasting, Joe has nailed it. Episodes range from two hours up. I would guess the average length is three-hours. (more…)
“It’s better to die in pursuit of your dreams than to live a life without hope.” Terry Brooks
Not so long back my family and I decided to pack everything up and move to Japan. I’d be lying if I’d say I wasn’t scared, fearful or filled with doubt. The truth is I still have doubt. Was it the right move? What’s next?
The decision, however, was made for good reason and despite all the challenges, fears, and conditioned beliefs, we went for it. (more…)

7 Rules to Guide You Through Procrastination
A few weeks I posted an article titled – Procrastination: Is Procrastination the Thief of Time?. This week I wish to highlight several rules I use to help guide me through times of procrastination. I hope they are of value.
RULE 1: When in a state of procrastination ask yourself the question, “Is this something of importance or can I eliminate it from all thought?”
If something is important to us, you wouldn’t think we would struggle to act upon it, right?
Putting off those things or importance whether for an hour, a day, a year we will certainly delay the fulfillment and joy it may bring into our lives. Procrastination can stop us from living our lives to their fullest, living our dreams and even prevent us from finding purpose in our lives. (more…)
“What if you were wrong? What if everything you ever believed was a lie? What if you missed your opportunity because you didn’t know your worth? What if you settled on familiar, but God was trying to give you something better? What if you decided not to go backwards, but forward? What if doing what you have never done before was the answer to everything that didn’t make sense? What if the answer wasn’t to be found in words, but in action? What if you found the courage to do what you really wanted to do and doing it changed your whole life?” Shannon L. Alder
I have found myself faced with a tough decision. It is causing me a level of discomfort, uncertainty, and unease. In absolute honesty, it’s not all that important, and for that reason, I am not highly stressed or concerned as I am confident that what eventuates will be as it should be. (more…)Summary

Out of Your Mind: Tricksters, Interdependence, and the Cosmic Game of Hide and Seek by Alan Watts
“To go out of your mind once a day is tremendously important because by going out of your mind you come to your senses. And if you stay in your mind all of the time, you are over rational, in other words, you are like a very rigid bridge which because it has no give; no craziness in it is going to be blown down by the first hurricane.” Alan Watts
This book is a book on philosophy and Zen Buddhism. I came across Alan Watts thought some inspiration videos I found of his about life. The thoughts were not only inspirational but intriguing. The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying
“Life doesn’t owe us anything. We only owe ourselves, to make the most of the life we are living, of the time we have left, and to live in gratitude.” Bronnie Ware
The top 5 common regrets of the dying.
- I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
- I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
- I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
- I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
- I wish that I had let myself be happier.
Why Was My Friend So Happy
“Happiness doesn’t depend on any external conditions; it is governed by our mental attitude.” Dale Carnegie
I was feeling dissatisfied with my life. I wasn’t really aware of this at the time. I felt normal. I held the belief that this is how life was. I kept telling myself that things will improve thinking that perhaps I was just in a rut. I started relying on this phrase, “If this…, then… that.”
I wasn’t experiencing any noticeable changes. Days, months and years passed. I felt quite the same – dissatisfied! I then realised that waiting on this or that to start really enjoying my life was a fucking ridiculous.
